WUI

Writing under the influence of alcohol on a Saturday night.

Whirling in a glass
Memories bring no solace
Sparking drinks do it

Twirl and spin we go
Clinking glasses drowns the pain
More more sparkling drink

Sweet nothings do not
Give much pleasure as it should
But I know what does

Make it sparkle bright
Bubbles make us happy fools
Foolish we shall be

The third haiku won me a bottle of sparkling wine/champagne. It was champagne night at the Wine Club event. Now I have 2 bottles in my room and no one to drink with.

Notes from yesterday

Slow day. Online. Woke up late. And slept even more. Yummy shrimp fried rice and the ironing board.

Wine club. Bubbly sparkling drinks. 6 types altogether. Weird loopy girl. Phonecall received in the midst. Smell of cigars. Frank Sinatra. High.

Alcohol fuelled poetry. Wine bottle won.

Big white van. House party. Masquerade. Beads. Lounging. JD. GAP. Drama. Familiarity.

Thoughts

Is fidelity the same as loyalty?

Interesting...something I found lying around, written ages ago

Yes, we crave the heady rush and perhaps we crave for that stabbing pain that won't go away when it all comes crashing down. The pain is this annoying yet intangible pain that you can somehow feel physically, right at the heart. And no painkillers can help you. Ah, such a special, one of a kind pain.

Passion is relative. Passion from the wrong person makes you want to crawl into a hole and hide. Passion to the wrong person makes painful agony, yet makes you laugh as time passes by, at your one petulant silliness. Passion with the right person makes you hopeful, and makes you into this grinning
idiot. Yet, how often do we find that? Is it not a mere illusion? Which dulls our ability to reason? And throws out our better judgement? I must admit, I'm a sucker for passion, that X-factor. How delightful it is to see her email or letter in the mailbox, her voice over the phone, her wit over IMs, her eyes so clear and truthful. All that, to sustain your passion, till it ends, before a whole new cycle begins. A different cycle, with its own idiosyncracies. Yet, the pattern is unmistakable.

As for looks, again it is relative. Today, you may think of her as the most beautiful woman in the world, but yet to the bystanders, they think you are nuts. When it is all over, that spot is assumed by the likes of Natalie Portman and Gong Li. But soon, someone else, someone real will take that place again.

At the end of the day, you want to feel safe. And you want to feel loved and cared for. And you want to give the same comfort and warmth in return.

For it all to start, I believe, the person must make your heart skip a beat.

A Commentary

It is sometimes frightening to realize how small the world is. It is even more frightening to know that our fellow human beings sometimes lose all rationality. The recent outcry over the caricatures of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in satirical forms has resulted in violent protests and destruction of embassies. The flames are burning bright on all sides. When you log on online to read blogs and the comments left on media sites, you realize that bigotry and ignorance is well and alive. You have some Danes (right wingers mostly) crying for war. You have Muslims thousands of miles away feeling angry and upset. You have people that cannot understand the fuss. You have more Muslims feeling appalled by the violence and hatred. It is really scary to see such a disjointed level of sentiments.

In instances like this, we hope Huntington’s Clash of Civilizations thesis does not hold up. This is a misunderstanding that stoked the fire already burning from years of distrust and antagonism. Violent reprisals are not to be condoned. The political opportunists on both sides of the fence as expectedly capitalized on the situation. However, we need to analyze the underlying sentiments.

Where do we draw the line between the freedom of press and responsibility to the larger society, especially when information can spread like wild fire? Where do we draw the line between legitimate dissatisfaction and the use of violent protests? Where do we draw the line of government responsibility and individual citizen-to-citizen accountability? These are the pains all of us have to go through, the process of maturing in a diverse, multicultural world. Society world wide is changing, with growing diversity that our systems and values may not be able to cope with yet.

But sometimes it is just a small step we need. Sometimes all it is takes is a bit of humility. The ability to accept that our way of life or our interpretation of things may not always be right is crucial. It is always an option not to take action that can cause hurt. It is also always an option to react with dignity to injury. We need to only add a dash of cultural sensitivity and acceptance of differences. We need to understand that we have no choice but to live with each other. We need to have good faith, in our actions and in our relationships as world citizens.

I am

unworthy

On Valentine's Day

Bored in class. And this is the result

bubbles oh bubbles
rising to the top
celebrate, commemorate
uncorked. i go pop

slow walk down the lane
watching from a far
do you know? should i tell you?
your socks are unmatched

very conceited
you say you are not
who the fuck are you kidding
wish you hell all times

gliding gracefully
taunting and tempting
just for a moment i hope
to delight only you

why now? why not then?
can't move, can't accept
wish you all the happiness
a traveller i'll be

Heh, a bunch of haikus by bored people in class.
